Signs You Have a Blocked Drain in Newtown
If you’re noticing any of the following signs, you likely have a blocked drain:
Slow Draining Water
One of the first signs of a blockage is when water starts draining more slowly than usual. This is usually because something physically blocks the path of the water and causes it to back up. Also, if you notice water taking longer to go down the drain, this could signify a hair clog or grease build-up.
Bad Smells
If you notice bad smells coming from your drains, this is another sign that they could be blocked. This is usually because there is food or waste buildup that is causing the smell. If you notice this, it’s important to call a professional immediately to resolve the issue.
Water Pooling Around the Floor Drain
For floor drains, if you notice water pooling around the drain or in the general vicinity, this is another sign of a clogged drains. This usually happens when the pipe leads to a clog in the drain. Also, you may notice water seeping out from the sides of the drain.
Toilet Water Rising & Falling
With a blocked toilet, you may notice that the water in the bowl rises and falls. This is because the blockage is preventing the water from flowing down properly. You may also notice that the toilet is making gurgling noises.
Overflowing Stormwater
For properties with stormwater drains, it’s a sign of a blockage somewhere if you see water overflowing from them.
Drains Gurgling
If you hear your drains making strange gurgling noises, it could be a sign that there is a blockage. This happens when air can’t escape and it’s being forced through the blockage, which causes the noise.
With any of these signs, it’s important to call a blocked drain plumber right away to come and take a look. If you ignore the problem, it could lead to bigger issues like flooding or sewage backup.

What Could Be Causing Your Drains to Block?
Some reasons for your drain to block could be:
Foreign Objects
For example, if you flush something down the toilet that doesn’t break down, it can cause a blockage. This is especially true for things like nappies, sanitary pads and condoms.
Wet Wipes
While many wet wipes claim to be flushable brands, they don’t break down in the water like toilet paper. This means they can cause a blockage in your drains.
Toilet Paper
Toilet paper is designed to break down quickly in water. However, it’s important to choose toilet paper specifically designed for septic tanks if you have a septic tank. This type of toilet paper will break down more slowly, which will help to prevent clogs.
Hair Build-Up
Hair is one of the most common things that can cause a drain blockage. This is because hair can easily become tangled and clump together. Over time, this can create a serious clog. To prevent this, try to keep hair out of your drains.
Tree Roots
Tree roots can enter through cracks in the pipe and then grow, causing the pipe to become blocked. If you think tree roots may be causing your sewer pipe to block, the best thing to do is call a professional plumber. They will be able to remove the roots and unblock your pipe safely.
Food Scraps
Food scraps are another common cause of drain blockages. When food is flushed down the drain, it can easily become stuck and create a clog. To prevent this, throw food scraps in the trash instead.
Grease Build-Up
Another common cause of blocked kitchen drains is grease build-up. This happens when cooking grease and oil go down the drain and then solidify.
Broken Pipes
If your sewer pipe is broken, it can cause a blockage. This is because sewage can leak from the pipe and into your drains. Also, if the break is big enough, tree roots can get into the pipe and cause a blockage.
If you have a blocked drain, it’s important to call the blocked drain specialists at MPJ Plumbing as soon as possible. A plumber will be able to accurately identify the cause of the blockage and fix it.
Steps to Prevent a Blocked Drain in Newtown
To keep your drains flowing freely and prevent blockages, MPJ Plumbing recommends following these simple steps:
01
Use A Drain Strainer
A drain strainer is a simple and effective way to catch hair, food, and other materials that can cause a blockage. It fits snugly over the drain and allows water to pass through while trapping debris.
02
Do Not Dispose Of The Cooking Grease Down the Kitchen Sink
Cooking grease is one of the main culprits of blocked drains. When hot grease cools, it hardens and can cling to the sides of your pipes. Over time, this build-up can lead to a blocked sewer line. To avoid this, pour cooking grease into a heat-resistant container and dispose of it in the garbage.
03
Pour Boiling Water Down the Kitchen Drains
Pouring boiling water down the drain regularly can help break up grease or other materials clinging to the pipes’ sides.
04
Never Flush Non-Toilet Paper Products Down the Toilet
Flushing anything other than toilet paper can cause a blockage in the drainage system. Materials such as feminine hygiene products, diapers, and paper towels should be disposed of in the trash.
05
Schedule Regular Drain Maintenance With A Professional Plumber
One of the best ways to prevent a blocked drain is to have it professionally cleaned and maintained regularly. This will remove any build-up that has already occurred and help to prevent future problems. MPJ Plumbing offers drain maintenance services that can keep your drains flowing freely.

Newtown Helpful Information
“Newtown is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located 3 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Sydney. The suburb is known for its bohemian culture and its many pubs and restaurants.
The first recorded inhabitants of Newtown were the Cadigal people who lived on the southern side of Sydney Harbour. Lieutenant James Cook sailed past Newtown in 1770 and recorded that there was a “large native town” situated on the bank of a river which he named after Baron Morton, the Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. In 1793, colonists established a farm on what is now Oxford Street. The area was known as “the manor” or “the estate”.
Newtown remained rural until the mid-19th century. In 1848, Edward Smith Hall built St Stephen’s Church and School on King Street. The church is now listed on the Register of the National Estate. In 1855, Henry Parkes purchased 158 hectares (390 acres) of land in Newtown and began subdividing it for housing. Parkes developed Newtown as a predominantly working-class suburb with a mix of terrace houses and small factories. He named it after London’s Newtown district.
Newtown was proclaimed as a municipality in 1859, one of Sydney’s first suburbs outside the boundaries of the City of Sydney. By 1900, it had a population of around 10,000 people. From the 1920s onwards, Newtown became known as a centre for bohemian culture and politics. The suburb was home to many artists, writers, musicians and political activists. In 1933, poet Kenneth Slessor wrote his well-known poem “Five Bells”, about life and death in Newtown.
Newtown has a population of around 16,000 people. It is located 3 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Sydney. The suburb has a diverse range of cultures and is known for its bohemian culture and its many pubs and restaurants.”
