Signs You Have a Blocked Drain in McMahons Point
Several indications can point to a blocked drain. If you notice any of the following, it’s time to give us a call:
Slow Draining Water
One of the first signs of a blockage is when water starts draining more slowly than usual. This is usually because something physically blocks the path of the water and causes it to back up. Also, if you notice water taking longer to go down the drain, this could signify a hair clog or grease build-up.
Bad Smells
A blocked drain can cause sewer gas to back up into your home through the drains. This can cause a bad smell. Also, if you have a garbage disposal, it may stop working properly and start to smell bad.
Water Pooling Around the Floor Drain
For floor drains, if you notice water pooling around the drain or in the general vicinity, this is another sign of a clogged drains. This usually happens when the pipe leads to a clog in the drain. Also, you may notice water seeping out from the sides of the drain.
Toilet Water Rising & Falling
Due to a blockage, your toilet water may start to rise and fall. This is because the water is not flowing as it should and is starting to back up.
Overflowing Stormwater
In heavy rain, you may observe that your gutters are overflowing. The water can’t flow down the blocked stormwater drain properly, so it’s coming back up. This is a sign of a blockage.
Drains Gurgling
If you hear gurgling noises from your drains, it’s another sign that they’re blocked. The gurgling noise is caused by the water trying to push through the blockage.
If you’re noticing any of these signs, you must call a blocked drain plumber as soon as possible. They’ll be able to clear blocked drains in McMahons Point and get your plumbing back to normal.

What Could Be Causing Your Drains to Block?
Some reasons for your drain to block could be:
Foreign Objects
If you or your family has put anything other than toilet paper down the loo, this could cause your blockage. Baby wipes, sanitary products, condoms, and cotton buds should never be flushed as they don’t break down as toilet paper does. This can quickly lead to a blockage.
Wet Wipes
Despite the packaging, wet wipes should never be flushed down the toilet. They don’t break down like toilet paper and can cause serious blockages. If you’ve been flushing wet wipes down your toilet, it’s time to stop. Throw them in the bin instead.
Toilet Paper
Toilet paper is designed to break down quickly in water. However, it’s important to choose toilet paper specifically designed for septic tanks if you have a septic tank. This type of toilet paper will break down more slowly, which will help to prevent clogs.
Hair Build-Up
Hair is the main culprit when it comes to blocked drains for many people. Hair can quickly build up and cause a blockage. If you have long hair, then it’s especially important to make sure that you’re clearing it away regularly.
Tree Roots
Tree roots can enter through cracks in the pipe and then grow, causing the pipe to become blocked. If you think tree roots may be causing your sewer pipe to block, the best thing to do is call a professional plumber. They will be able to remove the roots and unblock your pipe safely.
Food Scraps
If you put food scraps down your sink, they can cause a blockage. This is because they can clump together and form a “fatberg”. A fatberg is a big mass of congealed fat, food scraps and wet wipes that can block your drains.
Grease Build-Up
If you pour grease down your drain it can solidify and cause a blockage. This is because grease doesn’t break down in the water like other liquids. Also, when hot water mixes with grease, it can cause the grease to rise and form a layer on top of the water. This layer can then solidify and cause a blockage.
Broken Pipes
If your sewer pipe is broken, it can cause a blockage. This is because sewage can leak from the pipe and into your drains. Also, if the break is big enough, tree roots can get into the pipe and cause a blockage.
If you have a blocked drain, it’s important to call the blocked drain specialists at MPJ Plumbing as soon as possible. A plumber will be able to accurately identify the cause of the blockage and fix it.
Steps to Prevent a Blocked Drain in McMahons Point
Several things can cause a clogged drain, but there are some steps you can take to prevent it from happening in the first place.
01
Use A Drain Strainer
It will catch any food scraps, hair, or other small items before they can go down the drain and cause a blockage. Also, make sure to clean out the drain strainer regularly.
02
Do Not Dispose Of The Cooking Grease Down the Kitchen Sink
Cooking grease is one of the most common causes of drain blockage problems. When it cools, it can solidify and cling to the sides of the pipes, eventually causing a blockage. It is best to dispose of cooking grease in the bin.
03
Pour Boiling Water Down the Kitchen Drains
For an extra-strength clean, boil a pot of water and pour it down the drain. Doing this once a week can help clear blocked drains and prevent blockages.
04
Never Flush Non-Toilet Paper Products Down the Toilet
The toilet is not a garbage can; flushing anything other than toilet paper can cause problems. Baby wipes, feminine hygiene products, and paper towels should all go in the trash instead of being flushed down the toilet.
05
Schedule Regular Drain Maintenance With A Professional Plumber
One of the best ways to prevent a blocked drain is to have it professionally cleaned regularly. This will remove any build-up that could eventually cause a blockage.
