Signs You Have a Blocked Drain in Ashfield
Some clogged drains are easy to spot. The signs listed below indicate that you might have a blockage in your drains.
If it takes longer than usual for your sink, shower or tub to drain, you probably have a blockage.
With a blocked drain, bad smells are also common. This is because water can start to rot and produce bad smells when it can’t flow freely. Also, sewage or other waste might be stuck in the drain, causing the smells.
If water is pooling around your floor drain, it is probably due to a blockage in the main sewer line. There may also be water in your basement or crawl space.
Due to a blockage, your toilet water may start to rise and fall. This is because the water is not flowing as it should and is starting to back up.
Toilets are not the only drains that can overflow. If you have an overflowing stormwater drain, this is also a sign of a blockage. This happens because the stormwater drain is connected to a sewer line, and a blockage in the sewer line can cause stormwater to back up and overflow. Also, if you notice that your gutters are overflowing, this could be a sign of a blocked stormwater drain.
A gurgling sound from your drains is usually a sign of a blockage. The air can’t escape through the blockage, making a gurgling sound.

What Could Be Causing Your Drains to Block?
Several things could be causing drain blockages. Some of the most common include:
For example, if you flush something down the toilet that doesn’t break down, it can cause a blockage. This is especially true for things like nappies, sanitary pads and condoms.
Wet wipes are often advertised as being “flushable.” However, this is not always the case. Wet wipes can cause serious clogs in your drains and should be thrown in the trash instead.
Using too much toilet paper can cause a blockage if you have a septic tank. This is because paper doesn’t break down as quickly as human waste.
Hair is another common culprit of drain blockages. It can build up over time and cause a serious blockage.
If you have trees in your garden, their roots can sometimes grow into your drains and cause a blockage. This is more common in older properties where the drains are made from clay.
If you put food scraps down your sink, they can cause a blockage. This is because they can clump together and form a “fatberg”. A fatberg is a big mass of congealed fat, food scraps and wet wipes that can block your drains.
Grease is one of the most common causes of drain blockages. While it’s fine to wash grease down the drain, it can build up over time and cause a blockage.
If your drains are constantly backing up or becoming blocked, it could indicate that your pipes are broken. Also, if you notice any water leaks, this is another indication that your pipes may be damaged.
Steps to Prevent a Blocked Drain in Ashfield
You can do a few simple things to help prevent blocked drains in your home. By taking some preventative measures, you can avoid the headache and hassle of a clogged drain.
Use A Drain Strainer
One of the simplest ways to clear your drains is to use a drain strainer. This will catch anything that could potentially clog your drain before it has a chance to build up and cause a problem. Just clean out the strainer regularly, so it doesn’t become part of the problem.
Do Not Dispose Of The Cooking Grease Down the Kitchen Sink
Cooking grease is one of the most common things people pour down their drains without realising the consequences. It may seem like it goes down easily enough, but it can quickly build up and cause a major blockage. Instead, dispose of it in the trash.
Pour Boiling Water Down the Kitchen Drains
Pouring boiling water down your kitchen drains regularly can help to prevent clogs in the drainage system by melting grease and breaking up debris. Just be sure not to pour boiling water down cracked or broken drains.
Never Flush Non-Toilet Paper Products Down the Toilet
Things like feminine hygiene products, baby wipes, paper towels, and flushable wipes should never be flushed down the toilet. They can cause serious drain blockages.
Schedule Regular Drain Maintenance With A Professional Plumber
As with any system in your home, your drains need to be properly maintained to function correctly. Calling MPJ Plumbing for regular drain maintenance can help catch any problems before they become serious and cause a blockage in the drainage system.

Ashfield Helpful Information
“Ashfield is located in Inner West Sydney, 3 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district. The suburb has a population of 27,859 and is governed by Ashfield Council.
The area now known as Ashfield was first explored by Europeans in 1797 when Captain John Hunter sailed up the Parramatta River. He named the area after Thomas Ashfield, his friend and Master of the ship HMS Supply. The land was initially granted to ex-convict James Ruse in 1794, but he did not take up the grant. In 1807, the land was granted to settler Solomon Levey who built mills and a distillery on the site. The area became a busy commercial centre and by the mid-19th century had a population of around 2,000.
The municipality of Ashfield was created in 1894 and the town hall was opened in 1897. The first council meeting was held on 10 January 1898. The original municipality covered an area of 5 square kilometres and had a population of 5,500. In 1967, the municipality was merged with the City of Sydney. In 1984, it was re-established as an independent local government area.
Ashfield is surrounded by suburbs including Croydon to the north, Haberfield and Five Dock to the east, Stanmore to the south and Camperdown to the west.”
